Frequently asked questions
Stair Railings & Balusters
Can you replace my wood spindles with metal balusters without replacing the whole staircase?
Yes. Swapping outdated wood spindles for metal balusters is one of the easiest ways to update a staircase. Each baluster is fitted and installed on your existing stairs, so there is no need to replace the entire staircase.
What metal baluster styles can I choose from?
Plain, twisted, basket, knuckle and round designs, along with many other styles. You can combine them to create a custom look, and we will help you choose a pattern that suits your home.
What is the difference between stair balusters, spindles, and banisters?
Balusters and spindles are the vertical pieces that support or fill the space beneath a handrail. “Banister” is an informal term that often refers to the handrail or the full railing assembly. Knowing the terms can make it easier to describe the part you want to update, but photos are also helpful when discussing a project.
Which is better for interior stairs: wood or metal balusters?
Both can work well. Wood balusters often suit traditional interiors and can be coordinated with wood trim, while metal balusters are frequently chosen for contrasting, contemporary, or transitional styles. The best choice depends on appearance, design compatibility, maintenance preferences, and the condition of the existing stairs.
What are popular interior stair railing styles?
Popular looks include traditional wood balusters, black metal balusters paired with a wood handrail, clean-lined contemporary railings, and transitional combinations of wood and metal. Rather than following a trend alone, choose a style that fits your home’s architecture and the scale of the staircase.
Do metal stair balusters require maintenance?
Metal balusters are typically low-maintenance indoors. Routine dusting and gentle cleaning are often sufficient, but care instructions depend on the finish and manufacturer. Avoid abrasive cleaning products unless they are specifically recommended for that material.
Do you make wrought iron railings?
No. A wrought iron railing generally refers to a larger iron railing assembly and may involve fabrication or welding, which we do not do. Metal balusters are the individual vertical components installed as part of a railing, and we install them alongside the wood stairs, treads and handrails we build in our own shop.
Do you install metal balusters as well as the woodwork?
Yes. We build the wood stairs, treads, and handrails in our own shop, and we install metal balusters to finish the run. One crew, one point of contact, start to finish.
Can you match an existing staircase?
Yes. We match new balusters, newels, and treads to your existing millwork so a replacement or expansion looks original to the home. We do not take on restoration work, but we can replace an old railing outright, or tighten and secure one that has worked loose.
Can you fix a loose or wobbly railing?
Yes. We can tighten and secure a railing that has worked loose, or replace it outright. We do not do restoration or refinishing work on old railings.
Staircases, Treads & Remodeling
Can I modernize my staircase without replacing the entire staircase?
Yes. Many staircases can be refreshed without a complete rebuild. Depending on the condition of the existing structure, changing balusters, handrails, newel posts, or treads can make a substantial visual difference. An on-site assessment helps determine which parts can be retained and which should be replaced.
How can I update an outdated wooden staircase?
Common upgrades include replacing dated wood spindles with metal balusters, selecting a new handrail profile, updating newel posts, and changing the look of the treads. The best approach depends on your existing staircase, the style of your home, and which components are structurally sound.
Can I replace my stair railing without replacing the stairs?
Often, yes. A railing can frequently be replaced independently of the stair structure, provided the existing stairs and attachment points are suitable. The final scope depends on the staircase design and condition, so an in-person measurement is the best next step.
Is it better to repair or replace an old staircase?
That depends on whether the issue is cosmetic, limited to a few components, or related to the underlying structure. Loose railings may be secured or replaced, while damaged or structurally compromised stair components require closer evaluation. A professional assessment can help distinguish a targeted upgrade from a larger replacement project.
Can I mix modern railings with a traditional wooden staircase?
Yes. Mixing materials and styles can create a transitional look. For example, simple black metal balusters can add a contemporary accent to a traditional wood staircase. The proportions, finishes, and handrail profile should work together so the result feels intentional.
Do you build custom curved staircases?
Yes. Every curved staircase is planned and built to fit your home. Handrails are custom-bent in our shop, then shaped and sanded by hand so the curve follows the staircase smoothly from bottom to top.
What wood options are there for stair treads and handrails?
We offer a wide selection of wood species, tread profiles and handrail designs, from traditional to contemporary. Every piece is custom measured, crafted and installed to fit your space.
How long does a typical staircase renovation take?
Most stair and railing renovations are installed in two to five days on-site once materials are ready. Fully custom curved staircases take longer. We give you a firm timeline with your written estimate.
Custom Stair & Pet Gates
Do you make custom baby gates and pet gates for stairs?
Yes. We build custom wood safety gates for kids and pets. Each gate is measured, crafted and installed to fit your space, and designed to coordinate with your stairs and railings so it looks like part of the staircase.
Can a safety gate match my existing railing?
Yes. Our gates come in styles that suit both traditional and contemporary homes, and we coordinate the wood and balusters with your existing stairs and railings.
Custom Quotes & Project Planning
How much does a new staircase or railing cost?
Because every staircase and railing is measured and built around the home, we provide custom quotes rather than standard pricing. The materials, design, staircase layout, and scope of installation all influence the quote. We offer free on-site measurements and a detailed written estimate so you know what is included before moving forward.
How much does it cost to replace stair railings in New Jersey?
Stair railing projects are priced with a custom quote because layouts, material choices, measurements, and installation requirements vary significantly. We offer an on-site consultation and written estimate, so you can review a quote based on your actual staircase rather than a generic online price.
How much does it cost to replace wood spindles with metal balusters?
Replacing wood spindles with metal balusters requires a custom quote. The number of balusters, selected style, staircase layout, and condition of the existing railing all affect the work involved. An on-site measurement helps establish the right scope and an accurate quote.
What affects the cost of a custom wooden staircase?
The staircase shape, size, wood species, tread and handrail profiles, custom curves, finish selections, and installation complexity can all influence a project. Because the details vary from home to home, the most useful pricing information is a custom written quote after the project has been measured and discussed.
Does the number of stairs affect a railing quote?
It can. The total railing length, number of balusters, turns, landings, posts, materials, and installation conditions all contribute to the scope. An accurate custom quote considers the full staircase configuration rather than relying only on the number of steps.
Is replacing a railing different from a full staircase renovation?
Yes. A railing replacement generally focuses on the handrail, balusters, posts, and their connections, whereas a full staircase renovation may also include treads or other stair components. The right project scope depends on your design goals and the existing staircase. Request a custom quote based on the work you actually need.
Do you offer free estimates?
We do. We will come measure, talk through design and material options, and provide a detailed written estimate at no cost and no obligation.
What happens after I request an estimate?
Someone from the family will call you back within one business day to talk through your project. We then come out to measure and go over design and material options, and you get a detailed written estimate with a firm timeline.
Stair Safety & Building Codes
Why does baluster spacing matter for staircase safety?
Spacing helps limit openings in a guard or railing assembly and is especially important in homes with children. The applicable limits depend on the stair location, railing type, and governing code. Have the existing design and proposed replacement checked against the requirements for your project rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all measurement.
Can a loose stair railing be a safety concern?
Yes. A wobbly handrail or guard may no longer provide reliable support. Stop relying on a visibly unstable railing and arrange for a professional assessment. Depending on its condition and connections, it may need to be secured or replaced.
What should I consider when choosing a railing for a home with children?
Prioritize a secure handrail and guard, appropriate baluster spacing, and a design without obvious climbing footholds or unsafe openings. Appearance matters, but the proposed railing must also satisfy the applicable requirements for the home and installation.
